XML could become the most important Internet development technology for the foreseeable future. It is a whole new paradigm in the way information is communicated and exchanged. XML has three main features; a flexible structure for data markup so it can be used as a full featured (XML) database anywhere, a system of style sheets that allow the data to be dynamically formatted even as changes are streamed to the client (XSL), and the ability to transform data from one structure to another (XSLT).

XML is a derivative of the older and less familiar SGML, Standard Generalized Mark-up Language.  XML differs from HTML, Hypertext Mark-up Language the most commonly used on web sites today in that it maintains the separation of the user interface from the structured data and provides a framework for tagging that data. Once tagged in XML and exported to the user desktop, the data can be manipulated, edited and presented in multiple views for multiple purposes - all without return trips to the server. This offers a tremendous advantage over HTML because the resulting lower computational and bandwidth loads render the servers more scalable.
